Rustic Tiles

Where a polished tile reflects light back flat and even, a rustic tile catches it, holding a shadow in a chiselled edge or a tumbled corner, and giving a floor or wall something to say.

The look comes from an organic texture across the surface and the edge as much as the material itself. Travertine and tumbled limestone are two of the most reliable ways to get there, both worked so the edges soften and the face gains movement, while terracotta brings its own warmth and sense of age. Handmade ceramics carry the marks of the person who made them, and the better stone-effect porcelains are chiselled rather than printed, which is what makes them convincing underfoot.

Their textured surface also tends to grip well underfoot, making them a sensible choice for a terrace or a well-used floor.
