Rustic Kitchen Tiles

The kitchen might be the room rustic tiles were made for. Heat, water, dropped pans and daily use are all part of the job, and a surface with a material honesty to its texture and tonal variation carries all of that with grace. A rustic kitchen floor often looks better years down the line than it did on the day it went in.

Underfoot, our tumbled limestone, terracotta and flagstones all work hard and age well, their texture giving grip in the one room a floor is most likely to get wet. On the walls, handmade-look ceramics behind a range or along a splashback bring colour and movement without needing a pattern to do it. Both sit happily over underfloor heating, with natural stone in particular holding and giving back warmth.

Mixing materials is where rustic kitchens get interesting. A limestone floor paired with a handmade ceramic splashback, or terracotta run up to marble around the hob, gives the layered, grounded look of a country or farmhouse scheme. It works just as well the other way too, with clean-lined cabinetry and a chiselled stone floor picking up warmth and texture a plainer scheme would otherwise miss.
