Scallop Tiles

Few tile shapes carry as much history as scallop, its rounded repeat drawn from shell and fish-scale forms that stretch back centuries. It has found fresh popularity recently as a decorative accent, standing apart from the standard grid of square and rectangular formats most tiling defaults to.

Where a tile normally meets an edge with a straight trim, scallop is more interesting left alone: the curved silhouette becomes a distinctive border in its own right, giving a softer, more considered finish than a cut stop. Laying the sheet so its curves run along the horizontal rather than stacking upright changes the whole feel of a layout, so the same tile can read two distinct ways depending on room and taste.
