Floors carry more daily footfall than any other surface in the house, which is exactly where a flat, even-toned finish proves its worth. There's nothing in the grain to catch the eye or interrupt it as it travels from a hallway into the room beyond.
Our porcelain or natural stone, cut to a bigger scale and fitted with slim joints between each piece, is the usual route to that effect, turning a floor into one unbroken run rather than a patchwork of small squares. Cooler greys and deeper tones sit just as comfortably within this approach as a paler finish, so the same idea scales from a narrow hallway through to an open living space.
Where pattern appears, it tends to live within the tile itself rather than across the joints, keeping the floor feeling settled rather than busy underfoot.
