Edge of the Estate

Set within the mature parkland of a historic Hertfordshire estate, this project is a study in how natural stone can hold a contemporary scheme gently within an established landscape. Wychwood Limestone wraps the entire property, carried in a single tone from the front elevation through to the pool terrace at the rear, creating a continuous surface that allows the house to sit quietly against lawns and woodland laid out generations before it. The result is a garden that reads as one considered space rather than a series of separate zones.

At the pool, the detailing comes into its own. Bespoke copings, generous at 10cm, give the water a defined edge and a soft shadow line that shifts beautifully as the light moves across the terrace through the day. L-shaped corner pieces have been cut so the eye travels around the pool uninterrupted, while bespoke steps sit flush with the surrounding paving, and gently curved pieces follow the line of the water feature with a precision that feels entirely unforced.

Planting has been kept deliberately restrained, with white hydrangeas softening the pool edge and echoing the cool, pale tones of the limestone against the deep greens of the surrounding trees. Looking out across expansive lawns towards mature woodland, the pool terrace borrows its setting rather than competing with it, celebrating the enduring character of natural stone and the quiet confidence of a landscape that has been beautifully understood.
