Super-sized tiles: here’s why they’re a good idea

Bigger isn’t always better, but there are a whole load of good things to say about the latest wave of super-sized tiles. We’ve kept it short and snappy with our five top reasons why large-format tiles could be perfect for your home. And if you have a small bathroom, that could be you. Yes, really…

1. THEY'LL MAKE A SPACE SEEM BIGGER

Small bathroom? Don’t assume large tiles aren’t for you. In fact, big tiles can be just the ticket in a bijou room. They’ll accentuate the feeling of space simply because they offer an expanse of surface to draw the eye. It’s often said that larger tiles work better in small bathrooms rather than those on the petite side of the scale because bigger versions are less busy and with fewer grout lines. Which brings us nicely onto our next point…

2. FEWER GROUT LINES = EASY MAINTENANCE

If there’s ever an opportunity to get more tile in, we’re game. And thanks to the sheer size of large-format tiles - like Sculpture which comes in at 100x100cm - you really do get more tile and less grout on show for your money. Fewer grout lines help create a lovely seamless look so you’ll have less breaks in the tiling pattern, plus (and this is a big plus), they’ll be easier to keep clean. Ever had to spend hours scrubbing grout? No fun. With large tiles, less grout lines equals more time for fun things (like shopping for more tiles).

3. PATTERN ON SHOW

When a pattern is so good, you don’t want to break it up. Take Rainforest Porcelain Lemurian as an example. With its striking veining and brown, green and blue tones that are reminiscent of deep rich jungle plants, the 120x60cm size shows off the look of the tile in all its glory. The same can be said for Hollywood. We think it looks like a cut of exquisite onyx and, like the name suggests, should definitely be given the limelight.

4. A SLEEK LOOK

Imagining a calm, slick and uncomplicated base for your interior scheme? Whether it’s a kitchen or bathroom, super-size tiles are the ideal choice if you want other elements of your decor to be the focal point, or if you prefer a minimalist look. Large-format Riverside is one of our favourite designs that can work with lots of different looks. With a limestone-like appearance, Riverside Porcelain Perla is perfect for the kitchen floor and we can see it working with a super-modern just as well as a cosy, classic interior. To carry the look up the wall, in say a bathroom, we’d heartily recommend adding a dose of Riverside Wall Linear for a dose of texture.

5. QUICK TO INSTALL

It makes sense that bigger tiles means less tiles, right? Since these super-size beauties will cover large areas at the swish of some grout (it’s a bit more technical than that in real life, we jest), you’ll have a fully tiled space in no time. They’re a little less fiddly than smaller tiles and there’ll be fewer cuts required too. It’s worth mentioning that this type of tile is heavy, so factor this in when planning access and deciding who will fit them.
