Set deep in the rural Cotswolds, Calcot Manor & Spa has long been a place people come to slow down. So, when the team set about creating two very different spaces, a pair of elevated woodland Treehouses and a new wellness sanctuary called the Recovery Garden, the brief was rooted in the landscape itself. We were delighted to supply the tiles for both.
The Treehouses
Raised among the trees, Calcot's Treehouses are self-contained retreats designed for guests who want to disappear into the canopy for a night or two. Each one comes with its own kitchen and bathroom, and each has its own distinct character, so we worked across two colour stories that feel connected yet quietly different.
In Treehouse One, the mood is fresh and verdant. The bathroom splashback is dressed in STUDIO Bobbin Ceramic in Holly, a hand-glazed green with all the charm of a traditional turned-wood detail, while the shower is wrapped in Maroc Ceramic in Sage for a soft, sun-warmed finish. Over in the kitchen, STUDIO Cosmos Ceramic in Jardin brings a painterly botanical note to the splashback.
Treehouse Two takes the same architecture somewhere moodier and more enveloping. Here the Bobbin splashback appears in a rich Chocolate, the shower in Maroc Ceramic in Aquamarine, and the kitchen splashback in STUDIO Cosmos Ceramic in Midnight, a deep dusky blue that feels wonderful after dark. In the bathroom, our Reform Composite Stone in Nero is used on the floor, providing an earthy feel to the room.
The Recovery Garden
If the Treehouses are about retreat, the Recovery Garden is about restoration. This new spa space was designed as a sensory journey, and every material was chosen to bring the surrounding countryside indoors.
"We really drew on the inspiration of the landscape," explains Francesca Roland, Spa Director at Calcot & Spa. "We're in rural Cotswolds, so all of the themes of colours and the palettes and the sensory journey were based around bringing nature into the space. We wanted it to be warm and welcoming. We wanted it to be non-intimidating. But it also needed to be beautiful and really practical for the space as well."
That balance of beauty and practicality runs right through the material palette. The sauna floor is laid in Trusloe Limestone Cobble in a Seasoned finish, its tumbled characterful surface bringing an instant sense of age and warmth. In the shower, Trusloe Limestone in a Seasoned finish, from our collaboration with the RHS, continues the natural stone story underfoot, while the walls are finished in Foundry Novo Porcelain in Beige for a calm contemporary backdrop.
Natural stone was a considered decision rather than a purely aesthetic one, and it is something Francesca feels strongly about.
"It's so important that when you're picking materials for your space that you're not just thinking about the opening and how it looks aesthetically," she says. "You have to think about how these stones will age, and you need them to age gracefully and beautifully and really stand the test of time. If you have that luxury and that quality, that will really reflect in the space that you've created."
Elsewhere in the spa, the same thinking shaped the changing rooms, where Brewhouse Porcelain Parquet brings a warm timber-inspired pattern to the floor, Portare Moroccan Impressions Porcelain in Joya Green lifts the shower walls, and Foundry Porcelain in Smeraldo adds a jewel-like depth to the changing walls.
Made to age gracefully
What we love most about both spaces is how honestly they reflect their setting. From the botanical greens and inky blues of the Treehouses to the seasoned limestone and soft porcelain of the Recovery Garden, every tile was chosen to feel at home in the Cotswolds and to grow more beautiful with time.
