Victorian Wall Tiles

Our Victorian wall tiles are where the period gets its warmth, from glazed brick tiles laid in a running bond to dado rails, decorative panels and glazes with enough movement to catch the light differently across a wall. The brick format, now usually called metro, sits at the centre of the look, originally chosen as a hygienic, hardwearing wall finish for kitchens, bathrooms and public buildings, and still popular because it simply works.

Laid in a half bond, it feels quiet and orderly; stacked, herringbone or double-stacked, the same tile becomes something more contemporary while keeping its period reference. A dado rail or border tile at waist height, with a different treatment above and below, is the detail that most clearly signals Victorian character.

Decorative wall tiles complete the story, from transfer-printed patterns to tube-lined designs and relief-moulded panels once used around fireplaces and in hallway panelling. Used sparingly, a column of pattern beside a fireplace or a run of border tiles at dado height gives a room genuine period detail without tipping into pastiche. Deliberate variation in the glaze, with colour pooling gently at the edges, is part of what makes each tile feel settled and authentic rather than uniform.
