Utility Chic

Utility Chic

For those lucky enough to have the space, the humble utility room – once a purely functional area for housing laundry appliances and sink – has now become a trendsetter in its own right. This once-forgotten room can quickly and easily be given a new lease of life thanks to a stunning selection of wall and floor tiles from Ca’ Pietra that transform a bland, boring décor into something truly special.

Using the same tiling throughout the kitchen and utility is a great design trick that ties the zones together, creating a feeling of continuity and space. For many homeowners however, the appeal lies in making the utility a standout feature in its own right. ‘Anything goes,’ confirms Hamish Smith, Creative Director at Ca’ Pietra. ‘Pattern and print play a big part in bringing personality into any home and with a compact room such as the utility, it’s all about making instant impact in a small space. For walls, consider the geometric Orla encaustic tile in a retro print, which complements all kinds of cabinetry. Or to add a luxury look, check out our Long Island Marble Honed Metro tiles, a brick-style design that can easily elevate a scheme and suits both classic and contemporary interiors.’

Colour is another way to make the utility a warm, welcoming space. In a stunning selection of iridescent shades, Yoga Penny Porcelain Mosaic is perfect for splashbacks and feature areas – the Teal works particularly well in utilities and kitchens – and talking of blue, Seaton Ceramic is a gloss brick tile that comes in Deep Sea, High Tide, Ocean Mist, Oyster, Rock Pool, Sky and White Sands for a calming seaside feel reminiscent of the Cornish coast.

‘Pattern can also be used to great effect for the floor,’ adds Hamish, ‘with our Marrakech Encaustic satin finish tile, a Moroccan-inspired design with a strong statement look. And for added Moorish influence, the Salisbury Encaustic brings back memories of sun-filled afternoons in exotic climes.’ If you prefer a natural stone finish, there are plenty of options with everything from our Marlborough Terracotta, to Corfe limestone with its honed or etched finish – perfect for creating a rustic effect in this hardworking space.

Special thanks to Burlanes and  Sarah London for the photography of these incredibly chic utility rooms (pictured above).
