Round To Theirs: @cromwell.cottage.renovation

Taking on a neglected old Georgian cottage with the aim of turning it into warm and welcoming home is no mean feat. But for Billy and Clair Mead of @cromwell.cottage.renovation, the journey is as much fun as the destination.

The property is a Grade II listed Georgian cottage in Berkshire, which was derelict when Billy and Clair purchased it, with years of wisteria growth that had ripped through the roof. “We wanted to restore the house to its former glory and create a home for our family to enjoy,” reveals Billy. “In terms of style, we have an eclectic taste. It’s warm, cosy, comfy and homely with some old pieces of furniture and modern elements too.”

One of completed rooms is the stunning family bathroom, which oozes country house hotel chic. Rather than attempting to squeeze in a shower, the couple chose to concentrate on having a freestanding bath with double vanity basins instead. The floor and wall tiles are both from Ca’ Pietra, with Patisserie Monochrome Encaustic satin finish tiles on the floor and Delicate Metro ceramic rectangular tiles for the walls, laid in a brick effect. The hexagonal floor tiles were something the couple were instantly attracted to. “We have always loved Ca’ Pietra’s ranges,” adds Billy, “and absolutely love the hexagons. We actually have the blue version of the same tiles in our cloakroom. We wanted something quite classic in this bathroom but with a modern twist, hence the monochrome colouring with antique brass taps. When designing our home, we find quite simple elements that we love individually and sort of throw them together in the hope that it works.”

It certainly does work and the result is a luxurious yet laid-back look that blends function with style. In his job as a video editor, Billy is used to being creative but when it comes to designing their home, the two creative aspects are very different. “It’s a lovely distraction away from the everyday stresses and Clair and I love it,” says Billy. “We explore the internet and magazines for ideas and design it all ourselves but had a company draw it all up. Clair is studying for an interior design course online at the moment, as we want to be able to do all the drawings ourselves in the future.”

The couple have not just limited themselves to the Georgian renovation however, as they have also recently completed a Devon barn conversion, which is available to book on Boutique Retreats and also serves as a film and still shoot location (@the.threshing.barn.devon).
