Marrying the elegance of Georgian architecture with contemporary innovation and modern country sensibilities, this new-build property by Sherbourne Developments represents the best of all worlds.

Located in the Cotswolds, it was built for a family of four, including two teenagers. The interior was designed by Margaret Morgan, Design Head at Sherbourne Interiors. ‘The clients wanted a Georgian-style house and the brief was to create a more modern aesthetic that tied in with the Georgian look,’ she explains. ‘The clients love colour and pattern and wanted to create a cosy forever home.’ As the clients have a dog, and also to tie in with the Georgian aesthetic, stone floors in the key areas were a prerequisite.

An elegant limestone floor from Ca' Pietra Artisans was selected for the generous hallway, which is large enough to fit an exquisite reclaimed oak console table and a classic sofa. ‘At the front entrance of our Georgian-style houses, we always use Blandford stone with Marron Emperador cabochons in a diamond formation and with a beautiful border around it to evoke that grand hallway aesthetic,’ explains Margaret. ‘The flooring injects that element of grandeur synonymous with the Georgian era. We always take the stone to the back of the house as well into the kitchen, boot room and utility but we change it for a more informal look. Here, we used tumbled Blandford limestone in a random lay to evoke a more relaxed environment, as well creating durability and longevity that’s true to the style.’

The timeless and elegant limestone flooring enhances the bright and airy feel in the modern country style kitchen with its beamed vaulted ceiling and exposed Cotswold stone fireplace wall. The client loves blue so pale blue Shaker-style cabinetry and an island inject the soft and muted shades appropriate to country houses. Meanwhile, in the kitchen sitting area, comfy armchairs upholstered in a bold print bring in personality and warmth. ‘The spacer needed a punch of colour so I blended colours together on the fabric,’ explains Margaret.

The Blandford limestone was continued through into the boot room, where dark navy blue panelling introduces drama. ‘I like using quite a bold colour in boot rooms as it fits in with the Georgian look. I usually choose dark blue or dark Hunter Green,’ explains Margaret.

Ca' Pietra Artisans’ products are continued upstairs, featuring throughout the bathrooms.

The main bathroom continues the soft blue palette from downstairs with a bespoke pale blue double washstand featuring a Long Island marble vanity top and an elegant rolltop from Victoria + Albert. Margaret chose exquisite Parisian Chic Porcelain Paix ceramic floor tiles for their beautiful subtle pattern. ‘I absolutely love this range,’ she says. ‘It ties in with everything, including the colour on the wall, and brings interest into the room without leaning away from the Georgian look.’ The floor tiles inject a modern twist, which extends to the elegant Long Island Marble Herringbone tiles selected for the shower walls.

It was important to the client that ‘each bathroom was different and a fun experience,’ says Margaret. The guest bathroom has a boutique hotel aesthetic showcasing a bespoke sage green washstand with a Long Island marble vanity top. Stunning Atlas Porcelain Denim tiles were laid on the floor with Carter Ceramic Ecru tiles used on the shower walls. The result is an alluring modern country aesthetic.

The children’s bathrooms are very different. The daughter’s bathroom was designed to grow with her and features a beautiful bespoke lilac washstand with an Aliseo marble vanity top and exquisite Parisian Chic Porcelain Lilas floor tiles decorated with a ‘wonderful pattern’, according to Margaret. These tiles replicate the soft, pastel tones of the worn ones found in Parisian cafés. They are teamed with Kennet Porcelain tiles in Chalk White on the shower walls. ‘The whole room is fresh and light. It’s a tasteful scheme and we didn’t want it to be too girly. We’ve kept it muted and incorporated off-white ceramic tiles with polka dot tiles in the niche to create a bit of fun.’

The aim with the son’s bathroom was to create a more masculine and contemporary scheme to fit with his style. Margaret introduced drama with a Nero Marble Unhoned vanity top and Metropolitan Slate Riven Chevron tiles on the floor with contrast grout also from Ca' Pietra Artisans, evoking a contemporary look. She created a statement shower with Chemistry Verdigris Satin Porcelain full-length tiles. ‘He loves green so we wanted to incorporate that and make it a real teenage boy’s scheme that will stand the test of time.’
