How We Find the Perfect Material for Every Project

'In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different,' said Coco Chanel, and that could certainly apply to the application of unique stones. 'Use of rare stones is about exclusivity and permanence,' explains Ionela Macovei of Bespoke Projects at Ca' Pietra Artisans. 'A rare stone adds an unmistakeable sense of individuality to a space. No two pieces are the same, so the client knows they're getting something entirely unique. There's also a tactile, emotional quality that can't be replaced with man-made alternatives.'

Sourcing rare and unique stones is a highly specialised service offered by Ca' Pietra Artisans that is typically used by interior designers, architects and landscape designers working on high-end residential or boutique commercial projects. 'Our clients come to us when they're looking for something truly exceptional that can't be found in standard ranges,' explains Ionela. 'They are seeking stones that bring natural beauty, subtle luxury, and that will become conversation pieces and focal points.'

The appeal of such alluring stones ensures that they are predominantly showcased in high-end residential properties, such as private homes, villas and estates. 'In addition, we do work with boutique hotels and luxury hospitality venues where designers want to make a lasting impression with something truly distinctive,' says Ionela.

Stones are defined as rare or unique due to several different factors. The quarry itself may be the reason as the stones might come from a small or closed quarry or from seams that are no longer commerically accessible. Other stones, meanwhile, are prized for their unusual veining, fossil content, colour variations, or translucence. When it comes to the choice of stone, some clients know exactly what they require. 'They may have seen a rare marble in a project or magazine and want something similar,' explains Ionela. 'Clients may also have heard about specific stones through word of mouth, previous project case studies or through designers and architects who've worked with us before. We also showcase them at events like Decorex and through tailored presentaions in our showroooms or at client studios.'

Not all clients know exactly which stone they require and may need our expertise. 'Some simply brief us with a vision or a mood,' says Ionela. 'They may be looking for something dramatic, something with movement or a colour that ties into the rest of the scheme, and they rely on us to present options that meet the aesthetic and practical needs of the space.'

Our ability to source these stones is down to longstanding relationships developed with quarries and specialist suppliers around the world - from Italy and Turkey to South America. Unique stones are typically found in South America, Italy and Africa, with each region offering distinct geological characteristics that make their stones special. 'When a client comes to us with a specific requirement, we'll first search our own stock and trusted partners, then go further afield if necessary,' explains Ionela. 'We also make visits to inspect blocks in person when required, ensuring consistency and suitability before cutting.

Among the unique statement stones we have sources are Amazonite marble from Egypt, a beautiful turqouise marble with intricate warm white and brown veining; Caribbean Island Marble from Namibia, a white marble with exquisite brown and grey veining; Blue Onyx from South America, a translucent stone with deep blue and gold tones, which is perfect for backlit features; and Fior di Bosco marble from Tuscany, a subtle but rich grey stone with elegant white veining.

Such rare stones are typically used selectively as a statement in key areas, paired with more accesible materials elsewhere. 'It's about impact rather than volume,' says Ionela. 'Bespoke fabrication with the stone is where our craftsmanship really comes in.'

Durability, porosity and maintenance are key factors in where the rare stones are used. Some are softer or more porous, so they are better suited to vertical applications or low-traffic areas. 'We always advise on sealing, upkeep, and the best practical use for each type of stone,' says Ionela. Rare stones have been installed everywhere from entrance halls to staircases, kitchens and bathroms, with vanity countertops, feature fireplaces and book-matched shower walls - areas where the stone becomes a central element of the design.

And the application of rare stone is an investment beyond monetary value. 'It adds design value and prestige,' says Ionela. 'For resale, it signals quality and investment in materials. But for most of our clients, it's about the enjoyment and uniqueness it brings every day.'
