The recent renovation of a Hampstead flat has beautifully transformed a one-storey residence in a late 18th-century mansion block into an elegant retreat for a family seeking solace from the busyness of central London. Located on the third floor, the flat had been left largely untouched for 20 to 30 years, lacking central heating and needing modernisation. The project aimed to reimagine the interior while preserving the building’s historical charm, incorporating elements that reflect the refined allure of classic Parisian flats. Features like French windows, parquet flooring, and elegant arches were introduced to break up the long corridors, creating a sense of both openness and intimacy.

The flat’s owner, looking for a London pied-à-terre for herself and her children, including one studying in the city, had chosen this historic Hampstead location. Enlisting the expertise of De Rosee Sa, the project design was led by senior project architect Claire Mannings and interior designer Eliza Davey, who embraced the owner’s vision of colour and character blended with a traditional London aesthetic. The renovation required substantial structural work: the flat not only lacked heating but also had issues with mould, awkward corner chimney splays, and an outdated dumbwaiter, which occupied valuable space. To address this, the design called for 13 structural beams and columns, allowing the rooms to flow more naturally from the central corridor.

A key feature was the widening of the entryway, carefully preserving the original stained glass door to create a warm and welcoming entrance. The dining area within the kitchen was designed to be cosy for family mealtimes while keeping the layout open so that the owner could cook and socialise simultaneously.

Ca' Pietra Artisans products were chosen for their high quality and ability to elevate the space, particularly in the master ensuite. Their stone materials required precision, but challenges were successfully overcome, resulting in a seamless, grout-free finish. The client’s preference for classic, neutral tones inspired choices like soft wallpapers, muted paints, and earthy shades, establishing a calm, timeless feel, complemented by wood flooring and a checkerboard entrance that evoke a subtle Parisian charm.

Through thoughtful planning, creative detailing, and collaboration, this renovation achieved a sophisticated atmosphere that respects the flat’s historical roots while providing a modern, tranquil haven for its residents.
