A substantial glow up certainly took place when this period family home in Wimbledon was extensively renovated, and a new extension, wing and basement were added. The sophisticated new interior was designed by Meraki Design. ‘The house was stripped down to its core and we thoughtfully reconfigured the space and finishes to align with the client’s needs,’ says Eris Koutsoudakis, co-founder of Meraki Design along with Maria Constantinou.

In the hallway, marble is used to great effect, creating a showstopping scheme. A new staircase was built that was clad with our Long Island honed marble. Eris also selected Long Island honed marble, punctuated with a Nero Marquina marble border, for the flooring. ‘We wanted a durable timeless stone that made a statement,’ she explains. ‘We were trying to tie it in with the existing property so it didn’t look contemporary - we reintroduced the architectural features because the house was completely stripped back. We designed the borders to define the entrance area and break it up otherwise it was one very long space.’

The main bathroom is in the older part of the house. ‘The brief was to create a sumptuous spa-like space, but we also had to juggle with incorporating a private WC, sauna, a shower, a freestanding slipper bath and a double vanity. The bathroom is in between two dressing rooms so we had her dressing room at one end and his at the other.' Our Calacatta Manhattan marble was chosen for the flooring, skirtings and countertops because of its distinctive veining and its colouring. ‘We really liked the colours of the marble; they are quite subtle,’ says Eris. ‘This marble has an elegance to it and feels timeless. In a few years’ time, it won’t look dated. It feels like it belongs in the property.’
