5 Ways with White Wall Tiles

5 Ways with White Wall Tiles

We’re sure you’ll agree that there are so many interesting things you can do with white tiles. From the shade of white to the finish, size, shape and layout, each design can be totally unique and different to the next, simply by thinking outside the white box. Here are our top 5 ways with white wall tiles to help inspire your next interior project.

1. Grout can change everything

Your choice of tile grout will have a huge impact on the finished look of your white wall tiles. A black or dark grey grout has maximum contrast and impact and is often used to create an industrial look for rectangular tiles laid in a brick effect. For a pop of colour, opt for a coloured grout that will instantly be as much of a talking point as the tiles themselves. This looks great in contemporary-style kitchens and bathrooms as well as utility rooms that need a personal touch. You can always pick out the grout colour and use as an accent shade for small appliances, ceramics and accessories in the kitchen or towels, toiletries and toothbrush holder in the bathroom, cloakroom or en-suite.

2. Consider the layout

The way the tiles are laid also needs careful planning, as this determines whether the tiles stand out or blend in as well as if they are to become a feature area or simply serve as a practical backdrop. Metro tiles are usually laid in a brick-bond effect, as this emulates the London Underground or New York subway style and it works in Art Deco-inspired interiors as much as industrial schemes and cottagecore chic. You can do this horizontally to make a room feel wider or vertically to visually extend its height.

For kitchens and bathrooms with a cutting-edge look, think about the interlocking herringbone format. Whether you choose a rectangular Metro tile or a long and skinny ceramic such as our Dolly collection, try to leave the edge quite raw for an artisan feel.

Another great design effect is the basketweave, commonly seen on floors just like its herringbone cousin. Taking its cue from the textile industry where a webbed impression comes from interwoven strands of yarn or fabric, this format works especially well with textured or gloss white tiles where the light plays on its undulating tones.

If you prefer a more straightforward style, the simple stack is created by laying tiles directly above and to the side of one another for a clean, crisp finish perfect for modern schemes.

3. Have fun with shapes

Just because it’s white doesn’t mean it has to be the ubiquitous Metro tile. Check out our Bamboo, Yoga Penny and Gelato designs for something totally different. The Bamboo collection is a reeded gloss porcelain stick-like mosaic that creates the look of natural bamboo and works wonderfully in bathrooms with a monochrome scheme or teamed with brushed brass shower fittings. Yoga Penny porcelain is also a mosaic design with an eye-catching iridescent finish. The raku effect on the glaze enhances the luxe look and it’s ideal for kitchens, bathrooms and living spaces. Or for something that instantly grabs the attention, our scallop-shaped Gelato porcelain is right on trend and makes a wonderful splashback in kitchens and bathrooms.

If you do want to go for a classic brick tile, why not add a shaped design area into a shower recess or wall niche behind the bath to break up the look or go for contrast with shaped tiling on a splashback, alcove or chimney breast behind a range cooker and team with brick tiles within the rest of the room.

4. Style as you like

White wall tiles are so incredibly versatile and you can style them as you please. Pretty much anything goes – contemporary, classic and everything in between – so let your imagination and creativity run wild. In modern decors, think about teaming with a random pattern or go Scandi with wood-effect porcelain. For a timeless, traditional feel, look to our encaustic tile collections that offer handmade artisan charm and character. Marble instantly creates wow factor with a luxurious look and feel and you can also finish off with a complementary border and skirting. Our Long Island marble for instance looks fabulous with matching skirting in a honed finish.

5. Blend colours for impact

Using two different colours from the same tile collection can be so inspiring, as this shower area from @jo_fastnedge shows. Using our Colour Pop ceramic tile in Branco and Artico, the colour blend is so successful it gives the walk-in shower warmth, design appeal and visual impact with its floor-to-ceiling tiling. For your own design, choose a white wall tile from our extensive collection and consider blending with a different hue from the same range to give your space a unique look that’s all your own.
